Clare and Lee Crowe

Trip to New Zealand – 1950-51

During the British winter of 1951/1952 Granny and Grandpa went by liner to New Zealand to visit Grandpa's brother and his family. Granny kept a journal of the trip, and preserved numerous postcards and photographs. Thanks to Heather and Glenda for letting me have this material.

Crowd onshore
A crowd line the quayside. No indication where it is. It was in Melbourne that Clare described the excited scenes on the quayside, but that was at night.

Sri Lanka (Ceylon)

Among the places where they stopped briefly on the return trip was Colombo. They had tea at the Mount Lavinia Hotel where, fifty or so years later, Christopher and Daphne were married. Grandpa sent a postcard to Aunts Ethel and Dorothy. One of the photographs they took looks as though it was taken from the grounds of the hotel.
