These pictures were taken in the course of a walk from St Andrews to Ceres on the B939 on Friday 22 July 2011. The walk is described here.
There are seven milestones marked on the map between St Andrews and Ceres, and one more just beyond the village on the Craigrothie road.
I took the wrong fork, and went along Hepburn Gardens, and had to cut through along Lawhead Gardens to the Strathkinness Low Road.
The one mile milestone on Hepburn Gardens. Although I was on the wrong road at this point I may have taken the right milestone. The distances it gives, and its style of lettering are consistent with the subsequent stones on the road to Ceres.
This is the first stone on the Strathkinness Low Road (photographed on a sunny day in June). It is inconsistent with the later stones on the Ceres Road, giving the distances to Ceres and Cupar as a quarter of a mile less than those shown on the Hepburn Gardens stone.
Either the fifth milestone is missing altogether or I failed to spot it as I negotiated the narrow road and sharp bends around Blebo.
This stone is between Pitscottie and Ceres, and it should say St Andrews 7 miles, and Ceres 3/4 mile in the other direction. This stone gives the same distances as the stone on the road to Craigrothie on the other side of Ceres.
The stone just beyond Ceres on the Craigrothie road gives the same distances as the incorrect stone on the St Andrews side of the village. Here the distances are correct.
